Perched on a hill in the middle of the Tuscan countryside is the medieval town of San Gimignano. We were on a bus tour which included the Leaning Tower, a vineyard and wine tasting – since this was our last stop the bus was a little tipsy (some had REALLY enjoyed that wine). We disembarked and walked up the hill (It felt as though everywhere we walked in this country was straight uphill). As we neared the town I laughed at myself realizing that because America is so young the only image I could liken this City of Towers town to was something out of Disney.
The town consisted of one long main street with many side streets. In the 1200’s it boasted 70 towers built by wealthy landowners to show off their wealth. Today there are 14 towers of varying heights that have survived wars and the test of time. I could not believe that we were walking on ground that was more than 1000 years old. Stores lined the streets on either side.
The details on the doors and the buildings were unique and very old. This town has existed since the 4th Century!!! But even though this is one old city, they still have my daughter’s favorite Italian treat….GELATO!
