Only have one day in Jamaica? My husband and I love cruising. The scenery changes daily and the boats can range from very simple to elaborate. One of the down sides to cruising is that the excursions are pricey. Since we only have one day in each port we want it to be a great day.
On one of our cruises we visited Jamaica. I had only one other experience in this country, travelling with my daughter, her friend and my sister. While we loved the scenic Dunn’S River Falls, we felt slightly vulnerable as a group of woman, even on the cruise excursion. Many vendors consistently begged us to come see their wares and fat one point we had to go through a slightly claustrophobic path to get back to the bus. I felt boxed in. We felt both sympathetic and a little fearful as at times it felt as though they had the potential to be aggressive. This time I wanted to avoid that scene.
We were travelling with friends. We researched and found a website called Jamaica For A Day. It promised an all-inclusive day of sun and fun. I was a little apprehensive about booking an excursion that was not a cruise line excursion. If we did not get back in time the cruise would not wait for us, we would be on our own. However it appeared that many people were booking outside excursions and saving money. We decided to take a chance.
As we stepped off the boat and walked to the instructed spot a bus was waiting. Many others lined up. It took us about an hour to reach our destination. Our driver pointed out sites along the way. We stopped to take some pictures and yes, behold…. people were selling jewelry, drinks, etc. however, they were not pushy. The weather was superb and as we reached our destination we were ushered to the reception desk. After some paperwork, wrist bracelets were issued and we were free to wander the resort.
The resort had two pools, two outdoor restaurants, lounge chairs, shade if desired, snorkeling, kayaking and a pristine beach. For a small fee a few of us went snorkeling. We were given all equipment and brought via boat to a beautiful reef where we explored for about twenty minutes. Two of our party opted for massages and were pleased with the results.
All of us enjoyed the water which was just the right temperature.
Lunch was a buffet. There were plenty of options including trout, jerk chicken, an extensive salad bar and tropical fruits. The food was good and plentiful. I chose a big salad, trout and fruit for dessert….DELICIOUS! Drinks were also included however, our group were not big drinkers and I didn’t need those extra calories.
The resort workers were pleasant and helpful. The day ended with a bus ride back to the pier with enough time for a little shopping before we boarded the boat for our next destination.
I would definitely recommend this experience to all who would like a quiet, all-inclusive beach day on Jamaica.
Tip: If you want to snorkel but the idea of using everyone else’s snorkel repels you, bring just the snorkel without the mask. It will save you a little weight in your suitcase and you can slip it into most face masks. I do this all the time. The water was very calm here the day we went.
Kids: I believe there was an area with entertainment for the kiddies but check to make sure.
